museum quality and is based on a classic Viking helm found in a Norwegian burial mound. Found in nine fragments, the helm has been re-constructed and is now housed in the Museum of National Antiquities in Oslo. It dates from around 970 CE and is considered to be the finest helm found of that era. The "spectacles" (officially "occularia"), provided excellent facial and nasal protection, while chain mail provided flexible protection to the back and sides of the neck. As with the original, our Gjermundbu helm is provided with a leather chin strap.
Gjermundbu Viking Helm With Aventail by Paul Chen. Made from 18 gauge steel. Aventail made from riveted chainmail. Weighs about 4lbs 7oz. Inside circumference is about 25.5 ". Helmet has liner and chinstrap. All steel parts of the helmet have been given a rough "hand-forged" appearance and antiqued with a black patina. He was cremated and laid to rest in a funerary mound at the district of Ringerike, Norway. This unique Viking find was later dated to approximately 970 AD. The find was made on the land of a farm called Gjermundbu in Haug, which is a area in the district of Ringerike in central eastern Norway.This unique find, which was full of Viking artifacts, was discovered by a coincident during the Spring of 1943. We wonder who the chieftain really was? He must indeed have been someone very important, because the gear they found along his bones and ashes were amongst the most unique gear ever found from that era in all of Scandinavia. Particularly the Viking helmet, which is famed for being the best kept and finest Viking helmet ever found in the entire world.
