Saruman™ (also known as Saruman the White™), once the head of the Council of the White, was the wisest and most powerful of that Order. Saruman™ had great power over Men's minds and great skill in his hands, and he was especially knowledgeable about the lore of the Elven-rings and the devices of Sauron. He fell into darkness when he delved too deep into the study of his enemy's ways. He became the chief adversary of the free people of Rohan. Eventually he created an army of Uruk-Hai,™ grotesque fighting creatures, to attack the Fellowship and gain "The One Ring" so he could replace Sauron as "The Lord of the Rings™." Saruman™ possessed a very powerful wizard's staff. It was completely black with many flanges arrayed around a central crystal which resided in its crown.
