In Medieval times, Gauntlets were used by soldiers and knights and were considered an important piece of armour, since the fingers, hands and arms were particularly vulnerable during hand-to-hand combat. These sturdy and affordable Gauntlets are constructed of 18 gauge steel and are fully articulated and wearable. In addition to being completely functional, they are beautifully detailed in alternating steel and brass plated steel making a striking appearance. On the inside the gauntlets are fitted with a sewn-in leather gloves, ready to wear. Each gauntlet measures approximately 16.25 inches in length weighing in at about 4 lbs 2 oz. The pair comes pre-oiled for protection and ready for battle.

THE MEDIEVAL KNIGHT AND HIS ARMOUR
To "throw down the gauntlet" is to issue a challenge. A gauntlet-wearing knight would challenge a fellow knight or enemy to a duel by throwing one of his gauntlets on the ground. The opponent would pick up the gauntlet to accept the challenge. The phrase is associated particularly with the action of the King's Champion, which officer's role was from medieval times to act as champion for the King at his coronation, in the unlikely event that someone challenged the new King's title to the throne.
