
" The cutlass in swashbuckling lore is perhaps one
of the most popular weapons of the pirates. After
all, a pistol took precious time to reload, and after
the guns discharged, the cutlass remained the choice that
would keep working without hesitation. With access being
just an arm swing away, the cutlass blade design was shorter
than that of swords or sabres, having a broader, sturdier,
curved blade. It was considered ideal for fighting in
the close confines on deck or below. So successful in
fact that it was soon copied by many naval forces around
the world.
Believed to have evolved from the long knives used by
the early buccaneers to butcher their meat, the cutlass
had a blade length of about two feet, and was slightly
curved with a single edge.
