SMALL SWORD - 88SMS by COLD STEEL
The Cold Steel Small Sword duplicates the original model in weight, balance, triangular cross section, and deadly sharp point, but uses modern materials like 1050 high carbon blade steel, heat treated to a tough spring temper. The hilt features two shells with functional finger loops and a light, but strong, knuckle guard. Perfectly balanced and weighing only 22 ounces, the Small Sword comes complete with an attractive leather scabbard that features an intricately decorated throat and chape. A patriotic addition to your collection this historic replica will bring back the flavor of the past, ready to display in your home or office.

THE SMALL SWORD
Edged weapons played a critical role in the Revolutionary War. Battles like Guilford Courthouse were decided in bloody hand-to-hand combat where bayonets, swords, and axes were used. Riflemen, having no bayonets, relied on knives and tomahawks. Swords were widely used during the war. Infantrymen used hangers, while their officers carried short sabers. Cavalrymen carried heavier and longer sabers. Officers' small swords were light, straight, and slender.

Essentially a European weapon, this small sword was the final incarnation of the dueling sword. It first appeared at the close of the 17th Century and was very popular during the 18th century. The chief advantage of the weapon was its lightness, which allowed for numerous fencing maneuvers that had been unthinkable when employing the heavier rapier.
