During the 1700's the word "hanger" referred to the short sabers carried by the infantry, because it hung from a foot soldier's equipment belt, often next to his bayonet. This is the type carried as a close quarters battle weapon by the Prussian mercenaries serving as paid troops in the Continental army (and was preferred for its effective cutting stroke.)
Made by Windlass Steelcrafts, the Revolutionary War Hanger features a Solid brass hilt. The blade is forged in high carbon steel and is well-tempered. The sword measures 30 1/2" overall in length and its blade measures 24 -3/4" long, 1-1/4" wide and 1/4" thick. Wt. 2 lbs. 2 oz.

HISTORICAL NOTE: American Army almost extinguished at Valley Forge - Despite a turn of events, Washington was barely able to hold his exhausted army together through the severe winter at the encampment of Valley Forge. There, the army of 11,000 men holed up from December 1777 to June 1778, were devastated by a harsh winter and lack of supplies.
Here 2500 soldiers died from exposure or disease in the winter encampment, while desertions cut his army down to its all time low of about 6000: Washington feared a full scale mutiny and desertion which would mean the end of the rebellion. However, a Prussian volunteer, Baron von Steuben, took command of the camp and restored discipline, remolding the American army through efficient drilling and organizational techniques.
