The unique styling of this axe dates back to the descent of Indo-Persian culture. The crescent shaped axe head measures 7" L x 5" W and is constructed from solid carbon steel. The 4 inch steel spike placed at the end of the axe is a design feature that was sometimes used in battle as well as utility.

A ROMAN SOLDIER'S BURDEN
Josephus wrote in the first century that each man carried “a saw and a basket, a bucket and an axe, together with a leather strap, a sickle and chain, and rations for three days, so that an infantryman is little different from a beast of burden.” So it is of little wonder how they were nicknamed “Marius’s mules” (muli Mariani). The weight of the soldiers load including weapons and armour are estimated to total somewhere in the region of 30kg.
