Samuel Hart & Co To collectors of antique American playing cards, the term "Saladee’s Patent" needs no introduction. "Saladee’s Patent" is the name given to a deck of cards made by Samuel Hart in 1864 – a deck that is the first American-made deck, and perhaps the first deck made anywhere, with corner indices. The name of the Patent Holder, Saladee, is prominently displayed on the Ace of Spades, and so the deck has come to be known as "Saladee’s Patent."
