The Spectacle Helm is a variation of the Viking Spangenhelm and is so named for the eyepieces formed integrally with the nasal. Crafted in 16 gauge steel with full leather liner, chin straps, and authentic brass buckle, the GDFB Viking Spectacle Helmet is battle ready and perfect for the Viking reenactor. Dual rows of steel rivets line the crown supports while the large angular octagonal style eye cutouts and strong nasal offer clear visibility, mobility and protection on the battlefield. The helmet measures 9-1/4 inches from front to back nd 7-3/4 inches from side to side. The fine workmanship on this Viking Spectacle Helmet with its overlapping construction insures robustness and therefore the best possible protection during battle reenactment.

The Spangenhelm was a popular European war helmet design of the Early Middle Ages. The name is of German origin. Spangen refers to the metal strips that form the framework for the helmet and could be translated as clips, and -helm simply means helmet. The strips connect three to six steel or bronze plates. The frame takes a conical design that curves with the shape of the head and culminates in a point. The front of the helmet may include a nose protector (a nasal). Older spangenhelms often include cheek flaps made from metal or leather. Spangenhelms may incorporate chain mail as neck protection. Some spangenhelms include eye protection in a shape that resembles modern eyeglass frames and are often given the name Spectacle Helm. Other spangenhelms include a full face mask.
