ENGRAVED M1848 DRAGOON REVOLVER 1055 by Denix of Spain
One of the first revolvers invented by Sam Colt, this revolver was produced in various forms from 1848 - 1861 and in all about 20,000 pieces were made. It was a large powerful percussion-lock gun intended to be used from horseback.

This M1848 model was designed as a solution to numerous problems that existed in the Walker model. The new design incorporated a new chamber that allowed about 15% less gunpowder to reduce the problem of ruptured cylinders. The catch was redesigned to hold the loading lever even with heavy recoil. The size of the barrel was also reduced from 9 inches to about 7.5 inches to make the weapon slightly lighter and more manageable. Since this weapon was originally ordered for the United States Mounted Militia (known as "Dragoons"), this model was called the Colt Dragoon. It was used in the Mexican-American war and became a popular choice with civilians who had used the pistol in their service in the US Army.

This Denix non-firing replica has the size and handling characteristics of the original, with functional lock and loading mechanisms, and a square back trigger guard. It features an engraved cylinder features a Mounted Texas Ranger battle with Indians. This replica revolver can be cocked and fired, when the hammer is pulled part way back the chamber will rotate allowing the reloading process to be performed.

1846 Sam Colt and Texas Ranger Sam Walker collaborated to create a powerful revolver, the Walker Dragoon. Up to that point most pistols were single shot. Walker required each of his Rangers to carry two of these .44 caliber revolvers. The Dragoon was so large and heavy (4.5 lbs) that it became a saddle pistol rather than holster, even during the war. Part of the changes made to the early Dragoon was its size and weight, yet most civilians preferred the .36 cal. Navy model. This percussion revolver was used in both the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War and it continued to be a prominent firearm in the settling of the American west in the Gold Rush era. Hence, the Dragoon has been used in many films, far too many to list here but some of them include: "The Cowboys", "The Long Riders", "True Grit" (2010) used by Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), "Lonesome Dove" used by Guss.
