SPRINGFIELD STYLE LEATHER BAYONET SCABBARD HS7725 SZCO
This reproduction black leather bayonet scabbard w/frog is made from top-grain black finished leather with brass furniture, sewn stitching and copper riveted construction. Based on an original, it works with all Springfield bayonets and most other triangular bayonets including the Enfield. This type of scabbard was used for the .69 caliber bayonets as well as the .58 caliber bayonets through the Civil War as well as later until design changes in the late 1860's. It measures 19 inches in length, 6" across at the frog. The throat is riveted with 3 copper copper rivets and comes complete with brass bottom mount and integral black leather belt frog. Mounted on the left hip, the single loop is designed to fit issued waist belts approx 2" wide.

The soldier carried what he needed. Required companions to a musket, on his belt he wore a cartridge box, a cap pouch, and bayonet scabbard. The Civil War "Ring Bayonet" was a sharpened piece of steel with a ring on the end that slid over the barrel of a rifle; it was then turned and locked into place.

Bayonets were usually only used in dire situations where they had no other options.
While hand to hand combat did occur, more often the enemy would run away before bayonets could be used. Only about 1% of Civil War casualties were actually a result of a bayonet wound. There were however notable instances recorded in the history books where the bayonet played an important role.
