Every Union Infantryman wore a waist belt set with a cartridge box and sling, cap box, and bayonet scabbard. When space or access was limited on the waist belt, many items would be carried and worn over the shoulder. Union Soldiers carried sixty to eighty rounds of ammunition. Extra cartridges that did not fit into the cartridge box were carried in pockets or a knapsack fixed with leather shoulder straps. Haversacks were handy for carrying rations of pork, hardtack, coffee, personal items, and extra ammunition. Containers affixed with a leather sling that could be thrown over the shoulder made for easy access while on the march as well as easy discard when in the throes of battle.
