RIVER WITHAM SWORD SH2372 Paul Chen / CAS Hanwei The River Witham Sword was dredged from the River Witham near the town of Lincoln during work carried out in 1788. The sword may be a remnant of the Battle of Lincoln in 1141, but it is more likely that it was made between 1250-1300 CE. The inscription on the blade reads: +NDXOXCHMDRCHDXORVI+. (You can "help decipher" here)
Paul Chen swords are crafted in much the same way as swords were made centuries ago, except now the blades are forged from high-carbon spring steel. The blade finish is far from being polished; again more closely replicating what the medieval swordsmith was able to achieve. This River Witham replica sword will appeal to the re-enactor and collector who wants a sword with the same appearance as the original, with the thrill of its medieval inscription chanting its mystery to anyone with ears to hear.
The large wheel pommel and hand guard are made of solid steel and gives this blade a superb balance. The 31-1/4 inch forged 1566 high-carbon steel blade with long dual-fuller will perform with fearsome cutting ability and maintain excellent point control for the thrust. An exceptional fighting sword which features a 6 3/4 inch hardwood grip covered in black leather, steel fittings. This battle-ready River Witham Sword measures about 38 inches overall and includes a beautiful genuine leather wrapped scabbard with steel fittings.
The Mysterious Inscription A double-edged sword, 13th century, possibly of German manufacture but discovered in England in the 19th century is stumping researchers and causing a stir among armchair historians. The item in question was found in the River Witham, Lincolnshire, in July 1825. An intriguing feature of this sword is an as yet indecipherable inscription, found along one of its edges and inlaid in gold wire. It has been speculated that this is a religious invocation, since the language is unknown. Here's what the inscription seems to read:
+NDXOXCHWDRGHDXORVI+
