The Knights Order of St. James of the Sword
Following the example of the Templar Knights, about the year 1158, a group of thirteen Castilian knights decided to take a vow of protecting who were traveling to Santiago de Compostela. Some years later, in 1171, the knight's decided to take monastic oaths under San Agustin's rule, and later they received the official recognition of the Pope Alejandro III. Their functions were exclusively military having their headquarters in Montalban (Aragon). The knights of Santiago only admitted nobles to their brotherhood. At the middle of the XIIIth century the Crown was intervening directly in the appointment of the Order's grand Masters and in 1485 the Order's Grand Master was none other than the king. The cross is the symbol of Christianity and God's protection; the white colour is the symbol of purity and the red colour symbolizes the blood of Christ. The red sword-cross known as the "Cross of St James" is represented as a red cross flory or flowered cross over a white field, where the shape of the cross is actually the blade of a sword.
