KNIGHTS HOSPITALLER WOODEN SHIELDNobleWares Image of Knights Hospitaller wooden Shield AG877 by Art Gladius of Spain AG877 by Art Gladius
The Knights Hospitaller is a tradition which began as a Benedictine nursing Order founded in the 11th century based in the Holy Land, but soon became a militant Christian Chivalric Order under its own charter, and was charged with the care and defense of pilgrims. The Hospitaller Shield is made from sturdy wood, coloured in contrasting stripes of black and white, with the heraldic symbol of the Knights Hospitaller (also known as the Knights of Malta) emblased in its center. Crafted in Toledo, Spain, the shield is made of wood bearing a wonderful authenticty not found in many decorative shields. Beautifully finished it fashions highly ornate fitting making it a piece perfect for home decor. Equipped with a thick steel chain on the reverse side of the shield, the shield is easily mounted and also features an adjustable sword handle/mount giving the ability to mount most sized swords behind it. The Art Gladius Knights Hospitaller wooden shield measures 29 inches in height, 18.5 inches wide and weighs approx 7 lbs. A popular and versatile shield with an iconic design!

A great conversation piece, collectors item and even LARP (Live Action Role Play) accessory. A decorative shield not intended to withstand actual blunt force combat. Specs may vary slightly from piece to piece.

HOSPITALLER ORDER
The monastic hospitaller order was founded following the First Crusade by the Blessed Gerard, whose role as founder was confirmed by a Papal bull of Pope Paschal II in 1113. Gerard acquired territory and revenues for his order throughout the Kingdom of Jerusalem and beyond. His successor, Raymond du Puy of Provence, established the first significant Hospitaller infirmary near to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Initially the group just cared for those pilgrims who made it to Jerusalem but the order soon extended into providing an armed escort to pilgrims. The escort soon grew into a substantial force
