Fernando Alvarez de Toledo y Pimentel, THIRD DUKE OF ALBA,
is one of the most important figures in the history of
16th century Spain. His military prowess in the most significant
conflicts of his time was combined with his skills as
a courtier, where he wielded a great deal of political
power.
Don Fernando was trained in
the use of arms by his grandfather, Fadrique Alvarez de
Toledo, an illustrious soldier who fought in many campaigns
under Ferdinand and Isabella and Charles I. The Duke of
Alba opted for warfare at an early age and placed himself
under the command of the High Constable of Castle and
forced the surrender of Fuenterrabia (1524). This feat
led to his admission into the Imperial army where he fought
on all the great battlefields. His role as a politician
shone as brightly as his military career under Philip
II.
