THE PIRATE'S CUTLASS
The cutlass in swashbuckling lore is perhaps one of the most popular weapons of the pirates. After all, a pistol took precious time to reload, and after the guns discharged, the cutlass remained the choice that would keep working without hesitation. With access being just an arm swing away, the cutlass blade design was shorter than that of swords or sabres, having a broader, sturdier, curved blade. It was considered ideal for fighting in the close confines on deck or below. So successful in fact that it was soon copied by many naval forces around the world. Believed to have evolved from the long knives used by the early buccaneers to butcher their meat, the cutlass had a blade length of about two feet, and was slightly curved with a single edge. |
