THE ROMAN CALIGAE - SANDALS The Roman sandal known as the caligae was the Roman military boot. It was made of several thicknesses of leather and were equipped with studded soles. The design offered plenty of ventilation allowing any moisture encountered while crossing mud or rivers to quickly evaporate, thus greatly reducing the potential for "trench foot". Studded with conical hobnails for marching over rough ground and offering deep traction while on the battlefield, the metal studs on the soles also helped prevent the leather wearing down quickly due to the exhaustive foot travel that Roman soldiers endured.
