SCOTTISH THISTLE CAP BADGEimage of Scottish Thistle Cap Badge
Identification at any distance of differing clans was due largely to the wearing of the various clan plant-badges. It can be noticed, a badge is considerable feature, easily visible in the bonnet so as to allow other clan members to know who their clan, septs and friends were in a battle. This plant-badge is designed to be worn on the bonnet or balmoral, but many find it a suitable accessory for a sporran, fly or shawl. The Thistle Badge measures approximately 1 3/4 inches up and down and is made of brass that has been given a lusturious chrome plated finish that gleams brightly against the dark cockade of a Glengarry or Balmoral Cap. What else can be said but, "BLING!"...

The prickly purple thistle was adopted as the Emblem of Scotland during the rein of Alexander III (1249 -1286). Legend has it that an Army of King Haakon of Norway, intent on conquering the Scots landed at the Coast of Largs at night to surprise the sleeping Scottish Clansmen.

In order to move more stealthily under the cover of darkness the Norsemen removed their footwear. As they drew near to the Scots it wasn't the only thing hiding under the cover of darkness. For one of Haakon's men unfortunately stood on one of these spiny little defenders and shrieked out in pain, alerting the Clansmen of the advancing Norsemen. Needless to say 'twas the Scots who won the day.
