Where did the name "Chicken Ranch" come from?
Hard cash was difficult to come by in the 1840's and the local farmers and ranchers often used a barter system. The common item of barter for the favors of the ladies in residence at the Ranch was chickens, so soon enough it got the name, "The Chicken Ranch." The Chicken Ranch Brothel was established at about the time Texas became a State, at a little trading post on the beautiful Colorado River in La Grange, Texas. It catered to local farmers, ranchers and soldiers. Generals to privates stopped in during the Civil War days. |
