The 1849 Ames Rifleman's Knife was the first government contracted military knife and was carried during the Civil War. There were only 1000 made by Ames Manufacturing Co. in Chicopee Falls Massachusetts contracted on March 8, 1848. Purchased at $4.00 a knife, they were delivered as a lot on May 5, 1848.

During the American Civil War, swords were still the most widely used edged weapon on the battlefields, but there was a need for knives as well. Used in battle, and more importantly for utility purposes in the field, this style of a rifleman's knife was carried by both Northern and Southern Troops.

This replica Ames Rifleman's Knife by Denix features a 10" carbon steel blade that comes factory dull and can be finely sharpened to meet personal specifications and use. The contoured wooden handle allows for a secure and comfortable grip. The blade tang is secured to the handle with Brass Pins and a polished brass handguard. A lanyard hole has been drilled into the pommel making for additional storage hang and carry options. Comes complete with a black leather scabbard equipped with matching brass fittings for safe carry and safe keeping.
