CIVIL WAR CAVALRY OFFICER'S HAT CORD 10-998
In addition to the typical blue and grey color fabric that Civil War troops often wore, colors and braids were designed into their military hats to indicate the officer rank, function, and branch of the wearer. A cord circling the outer perimeter of a blue or grey hat, could easily identify the soldier to any onlooker. The most popular color, yellow, was worn by all enlisted Cavalry soldiers. Hat Cords are also sometimes referred to as braids, hobbles, acorns, bands, or straps.

These Top Quality Gold Hat Cords are a perfect fit for our Union and Confederate Slouch Hats. This Cavalry Officer's Hat Cord is made of Gold Bullion Thread and features Gold Acorns. The hat cord is fully adjustable. Available to both Yankee and Rebel alike, these Civil War Hat Badges are a great accessory to top off your authentic Civil War outfit. Ideal for re-enactments, weddings, LARPing, costumes for film and theatre.

"Legend has it" that the acorns at the end of the cords were designed to bounce off the brim of the hat to keep riders awake. Legend also says that "in the olden days", there were no such thing as combat patches, so the units had soldiers tie their acorns in a knot to show they were combat experienced. This was done by tying a half-hitch knot on each side of the "keeper" (or slide). The knots are referred to as "Combat Knots."
