THE VIKING WARRIOR & HIS AXE
The term viking was first used by Anglo-Saxons in England for the sea-based Scandinavian or Norse raiders of the Viking Age. Scandinavians or Norse were "Vikings" only when they went on raiding parties. When they returned home, they were simply Norse farmers and fishermen. Warriors of the Viking Age used different types and sizes of axes. Axes during this time were commonly used in hand-to-hand combat; smaller axes with shorter shafts were sometimes even thrown during an attack. The manner in which axes were used was largely dictated by the circumstances of the battle and the size of the axe. Much like any other weapon of the time, the ornamentation of the axe illustrated the status of its bearer.
