The Marto 160 Edo Katana is hand crafted by Marto of Toledo Spain.
The Katana Edo Samurai sword is a high quality replica reproduction of the original held in the Marto private collection that dates back to the Edo age, a period in japanese history stretching from 1603, after the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate to the year 1868 with the Meiji restoration. The Edo age characterizes itself as a long period of peace with the consequent decadence of the samurai figure. During the Edo period popular culture flourished. New art forms like kabuki and ukiyo-e became very popular especially among the townspeople. The stylistic evolution of the weapons produced during those centuries, reflects this situation. In fact the katana sword showed here has both the scabbard and the handgrip made in ivory (resin in the reproduction), engraved with scenes of daily life, that denote a ceremonial function and not a fighting one.
Marto has been a leader in quality for nearly 50 years, and as many collectors know, the attention to the exquisite detailing as exemplified in this museum quality Edo Katana has established Marto as skilled artisans of the finest decorative Japanese swords available in the world today.
